Lonehill Nature Reserve

Just 2 km north-west of Montecasino to the north of Johannesburg is a great little nature reserve and loch in the suburb of Lonehill (chapter 9 in Birding Gauteng). On my two visits to this spot I have seen the following birds: Black-collared Barbet, Crested Barbet, Dark-capped Bulbul, Red-headed Finch, African Paradise Flycatcher, Fiscal Flycatcher, Cape Sparrow, Amethyst Sunbird, White-bellied Sunbird, Willow Warbler, Southern Masked Weaver, Cape White-eye, Cattle Egret, Black-headed Heron and Green-backed Heron.

The koppie, which can be climbed for a spectacular view of the northern suburbs and Johannesburg, is populated by Rock Hyrax:
