President Ridge Bird Sanctuary

This bird sanctuary (chapter 2 in Birding Gauteng), is a gem of a spot in the heart of the suburb of Randburg close to Bright Water Commons and is a significant breeding ground for Egret, Heron and Cormorant. On our first visit We saw Cattle Egret, Black-headed Heron, Sacred Ibis, African Darter and African Black Duck.

The birds we saw around the dam include: Cape Sparrow, Crested Barbet, juvenile Karoo Thrush, African-olive Pigeon, Cape Turtle-Dove, Southern-masked Weaver, Thick-billed Weaver, Southern Masked Weaver and Blacksmith Lapwing.

On a second trip to the sanctuary we spotted Red-knobbed Coot, Pied Crow, Yellow-billed Duck, Egyptian Goose, Helmeted Guineafowl and Green-backed Heron:
