Rondebult Bird Sanctuary

The Rondebult Bird Sanctuary (Chapter 17 in Birding Gauteng) is a delightful spot consisting of numerous small dams and seven bird hides as well as open grassland with some game.

Trip 1 - January 2010
Here is a selection of birds that I saw on my first trip to this sanctuary:

Here are some pics of the mammals that I have seen at the site:

Trip 2 - September 2010
On the way back from an outing to Marievale on Monday the 13th September 2010 I visited the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary just south-east of Johannesburg and to be honest due to all the renovations taking place, and the low water levels, it is not a great place to visit at the moment. I think it would be worth checking again later in October or November as the place has great potential. The hides are now all locked and you need to collect a key from the security guard at the main gate. Here are some of the pics that I managed to get in the short time that I spent there:

Trip 3 - September 2011
I made a quick visit to Grootvaly Wetland or Marievale and spent less than half an hour at the resort. The water levels were really low and that seemed to limit the amount of bird species in the place. Here are some pics that I took:

Trip 4 - June 2012
On the 4th of June I visted Marievale and had some time to spare before fetching my sister at the airport so I headed off to Rondebult Bird Sanctuary and got some great sightings to add to my day list:
